|RELAUNCH. Site-Specific Animation Triptych. Arlington, VA. 2013.|
RELAUNCH is a site-specific animation tryptich in Arlington Art Center’s Tiffany Gallery. These animations together form a single work of installation art responding formally and substantively to the standout architectural feature of the gallery and of Arlington Art Center: a trio of Tiffany Studios stained glass windows. The windows, first installed in a mausoleum, are restored from an original set of thirteen. Through a partnership of arts- and historic-minded groups, the windows were recreated in their current configuration and space.
The history of the Tiffany Gallery windows underscores that preservation is married to compromise, perhaps including reconstruction in a lesser form or stripping away of the original context. These windows were constructed not for their own sake, but for the memorialization of specific lives. Through dislocation and restoration, the personal connection is severed. What remains is powerful, but reduced to the sheer pleasure of looking.
RELAUNCH addresses the windows’ dislocation and transformation by dislocating and transforming the windows yet again. The Tiffany Gallery is converted to a triple-screen movie theater, each screen precisely covering one window. Looping computer-generated animations echoing the windows through color, shape, and light play across the screens. The historic windows are both obfuscated and totally re-imagined. RELAUNCH asks what is gained and what is lost when part of the past is made new again.

|In the End, We Were Never So Different. Silent Animation Loop. 2014.|
Two Cold War bombers--one Soviet and one American--follow an eternal flight path over an arctic sea. Having lived out their useful lives, they spend their days as they are accustomed--flying in circles and dropping no bombs. Perhaps they have grown fond of each other.
In the End, We Were Never So Different is a meditation on crisis, missed potential, and changing relationships. It is a short film with no clear begining or end, suberting linear time and creating an opportunity for the viewer to determine their own experience.
